Dorothy Hull Library to host Virtual Author Visit

On October 13th at 7 PM, the Dorothy Hull Library welcomes Mary Doria Russell for a special discussion of her book, "The Women of the Copper Country". The novel is set in Calumet, Michigan about 100 years ago, when the area boomed with copper mining. The historical novel covers a time of unrest between the overworked miners and unyielding mine owners, deadly mine conditions, and a strike that made headlines around the country. You will also read about a most unusual woman who attempts to inspire hundreds of men to put down their tools and risk their livelihoods for a better wage and safer conditions.

The book is rich with history of the area and details of the community's struggle to hang on while the strike drags on during a brutal Michigan winter. The book is based on real events and, while it is a novel, the book is packed with well-known historical figures and the most shocking parts are true and relevant to today.

The book has been recognized as a Michigan Notable Book by the Library of Michigan. Mary Doria Russell is the award-winning author of 7 previous works, including "Doc", "Epitaph", and "Dreamers of the Day".

The discussion will take place via Zoom. To sign up for the discussion, or to obtain a copy of the book, please contact the library. If you would like to provide us with your email address, we will keep you informed of dates and titles of all scheduled book discussions. The discussion is open to everyone, and the group usually meets the second Tuesday of each month at 7 PM.
