Current Volunteer Opportunities

We are currently looking for passionate people to help with the following roles.

Green Ambassador

Position Overview and Impact: Help the Library implement environmentally aware practices by promoting environmental literacy and assisting with regular grounds and recycling maintenance.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Assist the Programs and Outreach Coordinator in creating a program around environmental literacy (a display, bookmark, event, etc).
  2. Assist in grounds maintenance.
  3. Take out Library recycling on a biweekly basis.

Qualifications: Knowledge and passion for environmentalism, ability to work independently, ability to transport recycling

Training and Support Provided: Standard volunteer orientation, optional training on environmental resources for libraries.

Time Commitment: Average 3-5 hours per month.

Length of Commitment: Minimum 3 months.

Position Overview and Impact: Help the Library provide excellent patron services by maintaining accessible and clean resources.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Help shelve library materials.
  2. Help keep the shelves orderly by shelf reading.
  3. Sanitize patron resources like public computers and kids’ toys.
  4. Create 1 display that highlights the diversity of library materials on a particular topic.
  5. Assist with special projects as needed.

Qualifications: Attention to detail, commitment to order and cleanliness, interest in books and films.

Training and Support Provided: Volunteer orientation, training on Library Privacy Laws and Policy, training on shelving, task lists provided at the start of every shift.

Time Commitment: 6-8 hours per month. 

Length of Commitment: Minimum 3 months.

Events Assistant

Position Overview and Impact: In assisting with the production of library events, this position helps the Library deliver free quality activities to our community.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Assist in the preparation and set up for an event. This may include preparing activities and/or crafts and setting up activities at the event site.
  2. Carry responsibility for an activity at an event. For example, this may look like being stationed at a craft table to help participants with the activity.
  3. Assist in clean-up of an event.
  4. Help promote library events.

Qualifications: Great customer service skills, ability to carry out tasks independently, demonstrates responsibility, great listening skills.

Training and Support Provided: Volunteer orientation, training on library privacy laws and policy.

Time Commitment: Average 2-5 hours per month.

Length of Commitment: Minimum 3 months.

Free Library Manager

Position Overview and Impact: Help provide free books to our community by maintaining the free library outside the front of the Dorothy Hull Library.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Maintain the Free Library weekly by:
    1. Dating each book deposited in the library to keep track of how long it’s been there.
    2. Getting rid of unusable books, i.e. books that are damaged or moldy, and books that have been in the library a long time.
    3. Adding new books to the library, when space allows, from the Dorothy Hull Library’s weeded materials.
    4. Organizing free library books however you deem appropriate.

Qualifications: Detail oriented, good with organization, ability to work independently, passion for books.

Training and Support Provided: Volunteer orientation, resources provided if candidate wants to delve deeper into free library management.

Time Commitment: Average 2-4 hours per month.

Length of Commitment: Minimum 3 months.

Outreach Strategist

Position Overview and Impact: Help widen the Library’s reach by working to connect the Library with community organizations.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Research local community organizations and assist with community mapping.
  2. Help create list of outreach opportunities.
  3. Attend outreach opportunities with Programs and Outreach Coordinator. 

Qualifications: Familiarity with Dimondale and Windsor Township preferred, ability to work independently, comfortable with public speaking.

Training and Support Provided: Volunteer orientation, resources on community mapping provided, works closely with Programs and Outreach Coordinator.

Time Commitment: Average 2-4 hours a month.

Benefits of Volunteering: Contribute to strengthening library’s reach and providing free resources to local community, gain experience with community mapping and outreach and public speaking, deepen connection to library community.

Youth Crafts and Learning Materials Assistant

Position Overview and Impact: Assist with in-library programming for kids to help the Library provide engaging activities for our younger patrons. 

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Create monthly craft for kids to do in the library.
  2. Sanitize kids’ toys biweekly.
  3. Create 1 display of library materials in the kids’ section. 

Qualifications: Attention to detail, commitment to order and cleanliness, interest in youth programming and literacy.
